An Introduction to Northgate
Located approximately 10km north-east of the Brisbane CBD, Northgate is a well-established suburb within the City of Brisbane. It is bordered by Nundah, Virginia, Banyo and Brisbane Airport.
Northgate is named after its railway station, a coined word combining North Coast and Sandgate. Soon after the Sandgate line opened in 1882, a workshop opened near the station to make railway signalling equipment. The Northgate Railway Workshops later produced station fittings and bridge girders. The Northgate-Virginia School of Arts opened in 1922 and is now Northgate Hall. A pineapple cannery opened in 1947, which became the Golden Circle plant. Northgate State School opened in 1959, and St John’s Catholic Church, dedicated as a Royal Australian Navy war memorial, opened in 1962.
With extensive experience buying across Brisbane’s northside, the team at Lauren Jones Buyers Agency has deep local insight into Northgate’s best streets, school catchments and long-term growth drivers.
Northgate was a mature suburb by the 1970s, and since the 1990s it has been marketed as a more affordable alternative to Clayfield. Today it is a mix of suburban streets, parkland and industrial areas, centred on its railway junction.

Why Choose Northgate?
Northgate is a rail junction. Northgate station is served by the Caboolture, Sunshine Coast, Redcliffe Peninsula and Shorncliffe lines, and Bindha station serves the north of the suburb.
The market is strong. Houses have grown by around 19% and units by around 22% over the past year. Houses take a median of 20 days to sell and units 16 days. About 56% of homes are owner occupied, up from around 53% in 2016.
The suburb mixes suburban housing with industrial land, and both railway stations sit beside industrial areas. Buyers should inspect the surrounding streetscape and land use of each property. Parts of the suburb were historically flood plain, so buyers should also check flood overlays.
Whether you’re a first home buyer, a growing family or an investor seeking a well-connected northside suburb, Northgate offers a level of connectivity and value that few comparable Brisbane suburbs can match.
