Toowong Suburb Profile

Toowong, one of Brisbane’s most connected inner-west suburbs, combines a direct rail link to the CBD with riverside living, a major shopping precinct and access to well regarded schools.

An Introduction to Toowong

Located approximately 4km west of the Brisbane CBD, Toowong is a well-established suburb within the City of Brisbane. It is bordered by Auchenflower, Taringa and Mount Coot-tha, with the Brisbane River and St Lucia to the south.

Toowong’s story begins in the 1860s, when settler Richard Langler Drew subdivided his land and named it the Village of Toowong in 1862. The name is said to come from an Aboriginal word for a bird. Growth took off after the railway and Toowong station opened in 1875, the same year the Brisbane General Cemetery, now Toowong Cemetery, was formally opened. The heritage-listed Regatta Hotel, named after the rowing regattas held on Toowong Reach, has stood by the river since the 1870s. Brisbane Boys’ College moved to Toowong in the late 1920s, and Toowong Village opened in 1986.

With extensive experience buying across Brisbane, the team at Lauren Jones Buyers Agency has deep local insight into Toowong’s best streets, school catchments and long-term growth drivers.

Once a fashionable riverside township of villas and large allotments, Toowong is now a dense, well-connected inner-west suburb. It has its own railway station, ferry access and a major shopping centre at its heart.

Why Choose Toowong?

Toowong is a short trip from the CBD by train, bus, ferry or bike. It is also close to the University of Queensland at St Lucia and the bushland of Mount Coot-tha.

The market is active. Homes sell quickly, with houses taking a median of 22 days and units just 13 days to sell. Recent growth has been strong across both houses and units.

The housing mix is varied. Unit sales outnumber house sales almost three to one, with apartment buildings concentrated around the station and river. Character Queenslanders and older homes sit on the hillside streets. Streets close to the river and creek lines have been affected by past floods, including in 2011. Buyers should check flood overlays, insurance and body corporate records on a property-by-property basis.

Whether you’re seeking a well-connected home, a high-demand rental investment or a long-term hold close to the CBD, Toowong offers convenience and lifestyle that few Brisbane suburbs can match.
